A windsock is easy to recognise, but the correct size depends on where it will be viewed and how it will be mounted. Before choosing a model, identify the location, likely viewing points, available clearance and any site-specific specification.
Start with the standard dimensions
Kalhar Enterprise’s regular windsock measures 6 ft in length, with a 2 ft mouth diameter and a 1 ft tail diameter. It is made from 100 GSM polyester with nylon stitching and rope; red-and-white and orange-and-green colour combinations are available. Custom length and diameter can be discussed for a particular project.
Check the whole installation
Record the proposed stand or mounting position, nearby buildings, equipment and access for inspection. Confirm that the windsock has clearance to move and can be seen from the intended observation points. The site’s installation team should assess the mounting surface and local conditions before fitting a stand.
Decide what the buyer needs to observe
A windsock can give a visual indication of wind direction. Its angle or degree of extension should not be treated as a calibrated wind-speed reading without a verified product-specific basis. A general diagram of windsock extension is educational only; it is not a Kalhar performance test. Sites with aviation or another regulated specification should give the supplier the exact required standard and request supporting documentation before ordering.
